American Goulash
Classic, hearty one-pot comfort food
American Goulash (sometimes called American Chop Suey) is a simple, filling dish made with ground beef, macaroni, tomatoes, and warm spices. It’s budget-friendly, family-approved, and perfect for busy weeknights.
Ingredients (Serves 4–6)
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
- 2 tbsp oil (if beef is lean)
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped (optional)
- 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
- 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) tomato sauce
- 1 can (14.5 oz / 410 g) diced tomatoes
- 2½ cups beef broth or water
- 1½ tsp paprika
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1–1¼ tsp salt (to taste)
- 1 tsp sugar (optional, balances acidity)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Directions
Step 1: Cook the Beef
- Heat oil in a large pot or deep pan over medium heat.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
- Drain excess fat if needed.
Step 2: Add Aromatics
- Add chopped onion and bell pepper.
- Cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
- Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Step 3: Build the Sauce
- Stir in tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, and beef broth.
- Add paprika, Italian seasoning, black pepper, salt, and sugar.
- Bring to a gentle boil.
Step 4: Add Pasta
- Stir in uncooked macaroni.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 12–15 minutes.
- Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Step 5: Finish & Serve
- Taste and adjust seasoning.
- If using cheese, stir it in until melted or sprinkle on top.
- Serve hot.
Tips for Best American Goulash
- Stir occasionally so pasta cooks evenly.
- If sauce thickens too much, add a splash of broth or water.
- Let it rest 5 minutes before serving for best texture.
Variations
- Cheesy goulash: Add extra cheddar or mozzarella
- Spicy: Add chili flakes or hot sauce
- Healthier: Use ground turkey or whole-wheat pasta
- Baked version: Transfer to a dish, top with cheese, bake at 180°C for 10 minutes
