Cheesy Mashed Potato Patties

Posted on December 29, 2025 by Danish Kaleem

If you’re looking for a perfect snack or side dish that’s crispy on the outside, soft and cheesy on the inside, Cheesy Mashed Potato Puffs are your answer. These bite-sized treats are not only quick to make but also incredibly versatile—you can bake them, shallow fry them, or even freeze them for later. Whether it’s game night, a party appetizer, or a comforting side with dinner, these puffs always steal the show.

Ingredients

To make about 12–15 puffs, you’ll need:

Mashed Potato Base:

  • 2 cups mashed potatoes (plain and creamy)

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or your preferred melty cheese)

  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • 2 green onions, finely chopped (optional)

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • Salt to taste

Binding & Coating:

  • 2–3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1 large egg, beaten

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch)

  • Cooking oil (for greasing or shallow frying)

Step 1: Prepare the Mashed Potato Mixture

Start with cold, creamy mashed potatoes—they’re easier to handle and shape. In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed potatoes with cheddar, Parmesan, green onions (if using), garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until everything is evenly incorporated.

Next, add 2 tablespoons of flour to help bind the mixture. If it feels too sticky to shape, gradually add a little more flour until it holds together nicely.

Tip: For extra flavor, you can mix in cooked bacon bits, chopped herbs like parsley, or a pinch of chili flakes for a subtle kick.

Step 2: Shape the Puffs

Using your hands, scoop 1–2 tablespoons of the potato mixture and roll it into a ball. Flatten slightly if you prefer a disc shape. The goal is to make small, uniform pieces so they cook evenly.

Step 3: Coat the Puffs

Prepare a breadcrumb coating by beating one egg in a small bowl. Dip each puff into the egg, ensuring it’s fully coated, then roll it in breadcrumbs. Place the coated puffs on a plate or baking sheet.

Pro Tip: For an extra crunchy crust, use panko breadcrumbs instead of regular breadcrumbs.

Step 4: Cook the Puffs

Oven Method (Healthier Option):

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C / 400°F.

  2. Lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.

  3. Arrange the puffs on the sheet, leaving some space between them.

  4. Bake for 20–25 minutes, turning halfway, until golden brown and crispy.

Shallow Frying Method (Extra Crispy):

  1. Heat 2–3 tablespoons of oil in a skillet over medium heat.

  2. Fry the puffs for 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crispy.

  3. Drain on paper towels before serving.

Note: Both methods work well. Baking gives a healthier puff, while frying makes them extra indulgent and crunchy.

Step 5: Serve

Serve the Cheesy Mashed Potato Puffs hot with dipping sauces like ketchup, ranch, sour cream, or even a spicy aioli. They’re perfect as a snack, appetizer, or side dish.

Variations

  • Spicy Puffs: Add ½ teaspoon chili flakes or smoked paprika to the potato mixture.

  • Herby Puffs: Mix in chopped parsley, thyme, or chives.

  • Stuffed Puffs: Insert a small cube of cheese in the center of each puff for a gooey surprise.

  • Sweet & Savory Twist: Add caramelized onions or a hint of honey with cheddar.

Storage & Reheating

  • Uncooked: Refrigerate for up to 1 day. Shape and coat before cooking.

  • Cooked: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 2–3 days. Reheat in the oven for 5–7 minutes to regain crispiness.

  • Freezing: Freeze raw shaped puffs on a tray, then transfer to a bag. Bake or fry directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to cooking time.

Why You’ll Love These Puffs

  1. Versatile: Snack, side dish, or appetizer.

  2. Quick: Ready in under an hour.

  3. Customizable: Cheese, herbs, spices—you control the flavor.

  4. Family-Friendly: Loved by kids and adults alike.

Cheesy Mashed Potato Puffs are comfort food at its finest: golden, cheesy, and crispy. Once you try them, they’ll become a go-to recipe for any occasion. 🧀🥔
