Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

Here is a rich, cheesy Philly Cheesesteak Casserole recipe that delivers all the classic flavors of a Philly cheesesteak in an easy baked dish. Perfect for family dinners and meal prep.


Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

Ingredients

Meat & Vegetables

  • Beef steak or sirloin – 500 g (1 lb), thinly sliced
    (ribeye is best if available)

  • Olive oil – 2 tablespoons

  • Onion – 1 large, thinly sliced

  • Green bell pepper – 1 large, sliced

  • Red bell pepper – 1 large, sliced

  • Mushrooms – 1 cup, sliced (optional)

  • Garlic – 2 cloves, minced

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon

  • Black pepper – ½ teaspoon


Creamy Cheese Sauce

  • Butter – 2 tablespoons

  • All-purpose flour – 2 tablespoons

  • Milk – 1½ cups, warm

  • Cream cheese – 100 g (3½ oz), softened

  • Worcestershire sauce – 1 teaspoon

  • Cheddar cheese – 1 cup, shredded

  • Mozzarella or provolone – 1 cup, shredded


Topping

  • Extra mozzarella or provolone – ½ cup

  • Fresh parsley – optional


Directions

Step 1: Cook the Beef

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over high heat.

  2. Add beef in batches and cook quickly until just browned.

  3. Season with salt and pepper.

  4. Remove beef and set aside.


Step 2: Sauté Vegetables

  1. In the same skillet, add onions and bell peppers.

  2. Cook for 5–6 minutes until softened.

  3. Add mushrooms and garlic; cook 1 minute.


Step 3: Make the Cheese Sauce

  1. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.

  2. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.

  3. Gradually whisk in warm milk.

  4. Cook until thickened.

  5. Add cream cheese and Worcestershire sauce.

  6. Stir until smooth.

  7. Remove from heat and stir in cheddar and mozzarella until melted.


Step 4: Assemble

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).

  2. Lightly grease a baking dish.

  3. Combine beef, vegetables, and cheese sauce.

  4. Spread evenly in dish.

  5. Top with extra cheese.


Step 5: Bake

  • Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes until bubbly and lightly golden.


Step 6: Rest and Serve

  • Let rest 5–10 minutes.

  • Garnish with parsley if desired.


Tips for Best Results

  • Slice beef very thin against the grain.

  • Cook beef quickly to keep it tender.

  • Provolone gives the most authentic flavor.

  • Let casserole rest before serving.


Variations

  • Low-Carb: Serve over cauliflower rice.

  • Pasta Version: Add cooked penne or rotini.

  • Bread Base: Layer toasted bread cubes at the bottom.

  • Spicy: Add jalapeños or chili flakes.
