American Goulash

Classic, hearty one-pot comfort food

American Goulash (sometimes called American Chop Suey) is a simple, filling dish made with ground beef, macaroni, tomatoes, and warm spices. It’s budget-friendly, family-approved, and perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 2 tbsp oil (if beef is lean)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
  • 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz / 410 g) diced tomatoes
  • 2½ cups beef broth or water
  • 1½ tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1–1¼ tsp salt (to taste)
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, balances acidity)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Directions

Step 1: Cook the Beef

  1. Heat oil in a large pot or deep pan over medium heat.
  2. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
  3. Drain excess fat if needed.

Step 2: Add Aromatics

  1. Add chopped onion and bell pepper.
  2. Cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  3. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 3: Build the Sauce

  1. Stir in tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, and beef broth.
  2. Add paprika, Italian seasoning, black pepper, salt, and sugar.
  3. Bring to a gentle boil.

Step 4: Add Pasta

  1. Stir in uncooked macaroni.
  2. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 12–15 minutes.
  3. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 5: Finish & Serve

  1. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  2. If using cheese, stir it in until melted or sprinkle on top.
  3. Serve hot.
