Air fryer Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry

Posted on March 1, 2026 by Danish Kaleem
If you are looking for a quick snack, easy appetizer, or light lunch that feels bakery-style but takes minimal effort, Air Fryer Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry is the perfect choice. With golden, flaky layers on the outside and a warm, gooey filling inside, this recipe delivers maximum flavor with simple ingredients. Using an air fryer makes the pastry extra crisp while reducing cooking time compared to a traditional oven.

This recipe is ideal for busy weekdays, tea-time snacks, lunchboxes, or even party platters. The combination of savory ham and melted cheese wrapped in buttery puff pastry creates a classic flavor that both kids and adults enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (thawed according to package instructions)

  • 6–8 slices ham (thinly sliced)

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (or cheddar cheese)

  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard or regular mustard (optional)

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

  • 1 tablespoon milk (to mix with egg)

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning (optional)

  • A pinch of black pepper

Preparation Before Cooking

  1. Remove the puff pastry from the freezer and allow it to thaw for about 30–40 minutes at room temperature. It should be cold but soft enough to unfold without cracking.

  2. Lightly flour your working surface to prevent sticking.

  3. Preheat your air fryer to 180°C (350°F) for about 3–5 minutes.

Step-by-Step Directions

Step 1: Prepare the Puff Pastry

Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Gently roll it out with a rolling pin to slightly enlarge and even out the thickness. Do not roll it too thin; just smooth the surface.

Cut the pastry into equal rectangles or squares depending on your preferred size. Usually, one sheet can make 4 to 6 portions.

Step 2: Add the Filling

Spread a thin layer of mustard in the center of each pastry square if using. This adds a subtle tangy flavor.

Place one or two slices of ham on one half of each pastry piece, leaving a small border around the edges. Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded cheese over the ham. Add a pinch of black pepper and dried oregano if desired.

Be careful not to overfill, as too much filling may leak out during cooking.

Step 3: Seal the Pastry

Fold the empty half of the pastry over the filling to form a rectangle or triangle.

Press the edges together firmly. Use a fork to crimp the edges and seal them properly. This helps prevent the cheese from oozing out while cooking.

Step 4: Apply Egg Wash

In a small bowl, beat the egg with one tablespoon of milk.

Brush the top of each pastry with the egg wash. This step gives the pastry a beautiful golden color and glossy finish.

You can also sprinkle a little extra oregano or sesame seeds on top for added texture.

Step 5: Air Fry the Pastries

Place the prepared pastries in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Do not overcrowd. Leave space between each piece to allow proper air circulation.

Cook at 180°C (350°F) for 8–12 minutes.

Check after 8 minutes. The pastries are ready when they are puffed up and golden brown on top. Cooking time may vary slightly depending on your air fryer model.

If needed, cook for an additional 1–2 minutes until perfectly crisp.

Step 6: Cooling and Serving

Carefully remove the pastries from the air fryer using tongs.

Allow them to cool for 3–5 minutes before serving. The cheese inside will be very hot.

Serve warm with ketchup, honey mustard, garlic dip, or a simple green salad on the side.

Tips for Best Results

  • Always keep puff pastry cold. If it becomes too soft, place it in the refrigerator for 10 minutes before shaping.

  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in batches if necessary.

  • Use good quality cheese for better melting and flavor.

  • You can customize the filling by adding sautéed mushrooms, spinach, or caramelized onions.

Storage and Reheating

If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

To reheat, place them back in the air fryer at 160°C (320°F) for 3–4 minutes until warmed through and crispy again. Avoid microwaving, as it can make the pastry soggy.

Final Thoughts

Air Fryer Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry is a simple yet impressive recipe that combines flaky texture with savory filling. It requires minimal preparation and delivers bakery-quality results at home. Whether you are preparing a quick snack for your family or serving guests, this recipe is reliable, satisfying, and always a crowd-pleaser.
