Beef Liver and Onions

Posted on December 25, 2025 by Danish Kaleem

Here’s a classic Beef Liver and Onions recipe, done in a simple, flavorful, and tender style 🥩🧅

🥩 Beef Liver and Onions

⏱ Prep Time:

10 minutes

⏱ Cook Time:

15–20 minutes

🍽 Serves:

3–4 people

🧾 Ingredients

  • Beef liver – 500 g (1 lb), sliced ½-inch thick

  • Onion – 2 medium, sliced into rings

  • All-purpose flour – ¼ cup

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon (or to taste)

  • Black pepper – ½ teaspoon

  • Garlic powder – ½ teaspoon (optional)

  • Butter – 2 tablespoons

  • Olive oil – 1 tablespoon

  • Fresh parsley – 2 tablespoons, chopped (for garnish)

  • Lemon wedges – for serving (optional)

👩‍🍳 Step-by-Step Directions

Step 1: Prepare the Liver

  1. Rinse liver slices under cold water and pat dry.

  2. Remove any visible membranes or veins.

  3. Lightly season with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.

  4. Dredge each slice in flour, shaking off excess.

Step 2: Cook the Onions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon butter and oil in a skillet over medium heat.

  2. Add onion slices and sauté 5–7 minutes until soft and golden.

  3. Remove onions from pan and set aside.

Step 3: Cook the Liver

  1. In the same skillet, add remaining butter.

  2. Increase heat to medium-high.

  3. Add liver slices in a single layer.

  4. Cook 2–3 minutes per side, depending on thickness.

    • Liver should be slightly pink in the center; overcooking makes it tough.

  5. Remove liver and let rest briefly.

Step 4: Combine and Serve

  1. Return onions to the skillet to reheat slightly with liver.

  2. Plate liver and top with caramelized onions.

  3. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with lemon wedges if desired.

🍽 Serving Suggestions

  • Mashed potatoes or creamy polenta

  • Steamed vegetables like green beans or carrots

  • Rice or crusty bread

⭐ Tips for Best Results

  • Use fresh liver for best flavor and texture.

  • Don’t overcook liver – it becomes tough and grainy.

  • Soaking liver in milk for 30 minutes before cooking can reduce bitterness.

  • Use high heat briefly for a nice sear and tender interior.

🔁 Variations

  • Add bacon slices for extra flavor.

  • Deglaze pan with red wine or beef broth to make a simple sauce.

  • Add mushrooms with onions for a richer dish.
