Ground Beef & Gravy with Mashed Potatoes

This Ground Beef & Gravy with Mashed Potatoes is a hearty, comforting dish perfect for dinner. Juicy, flavorful ground beef in a rich gravy pairs perfectly with creamy, buttery mashed potatoes—a true homestyle favorite.


Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the Ground Beef & Gravy

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional, for color & depth)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 2 tablespoons oil or butter

For the Mashed Potatoes

  • 4–5 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed

  • 3 tablespoons butter

  • ½ cup milk (or more for desired creaminess)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste


Instructions

1. Cook the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil peeled and cubed potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15–20 minutes.

  2. Drain well.

  3. Mash with butter and milk until smooth and creamy.

  4. Season with salt and pepper. Keep warm.


2. Prepare the Ground Beef & Gravy

  1. Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.

  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until soft and translucent.

  3. Add minced garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant.

  4. Add ground beef, breaking it apart, and cook until browned.

  5. Sprinkle flour over beef and onions. Stir for 1–2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.

  6. Gradually pour in beef broth, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.

  7. Add Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce (if using).

  8. Simmer for 5–10 minutes until gravy thickens.

  9. Taste and adjust salt and pepper.


3. Serve

  • Spoon creamy mashed potatoes onto plates.

  • Top with generous portions of ground beef and gravy.

  • Optional: garnish with chopped parsley or green onions.


Tips for Perfect Ground Beef & Gravy

  • Brown the beef well for deep flavor.

  • Stir constantly after adding flour to avoid lumps.

  • Add a splash of cream or sour cream to gravy for extra richness.

  • For extra flavor, add mushrooms or peas to the gravy.

  • Cheesy Mashed Potatoes: Mix in shredded cheddar.

  • Herbed Gravy: Add thyme, rosemary, or parsley.
