Here is a classic, hearty Meat & Potato Casserole recipe that is comforting, filling, and perfect for family meals. It can be made with beef, chicken, or minced meat.


Meat & Potato Casserole

Ingredients

Meat Layer

  • Ground beef or minced meat – 500 g (1 lb)
    (you can also use minced chicken or lamb)

  • Onion – 1 large, finely chopped

  • Garlic – 3 cloves, minced

  • Oil – 2 tablespoons

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon (or to taste)

  • Black pepper – ½ teaspoon

  • Paprika – 1 teaspoon

  • Dried oregano or Italian seasoning – 1 teaspoon

  • Tomato paste – 2 tablespoons

  • Beef or chicken stock – ½ cup


Potato Layer

  • Potatoes – 4–5 medium, peeled and thinly sliced

  • Salt – ½ teaspoon

  • Black pepper – ¼ teaspoon

  • Cream or milk – ½ cup

  • Butter – 2 tablespoons, melted


Topping (Optional but Recommended)

  • Cheddar or mozzarella cheese – 1½ cups, grated

  • Breadcrumbs – ¼ cup (optional for crunch)


Directions

Step 1: Prepare the Meat Filling

  1. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.

  2. Add chopped onion and sauté until soft.

  3. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

  4. Add minced meat and cook until browned.

  5. Stir in salt, pepper, paprika, oregano, tomato paste, and stock.

  6. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly thick.

  7. Remove from heat.


Step 2: Prepare the Potatoes

  • In a bowl, mix potato slices with salt, pepper, cream/milk, and melted butter.


Step 3: Assemble the Casserole

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).

  2. Grease a baking dish.

  3. Spread meat mixture evenly at the bottom.

  4. Layer seasoned potato slices on top.

  5. Cover tightly with foil.


Step 4: Bake

  • Bake covered for 40 minutes.

  • Remove foil, sprinkle cheese and breadcrumbs on top.

  • Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes until potatoes are tender and top is golden.


Step 5: Rest and Serve

  • Let casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving.


Tips for Best Results

  • Slice potatoes thinly for even cooking.

  • Cover tightly during first bake to steam potatoes.

  • Use stock for deeper flavor.

  • Let rest to set layers before slicing.


Variations

  • Creamy Version: Add ½ cup white sauce or mushroom soup.

  • Spicy Version: Add chili flakes or green chilies.

  • Vegetable Add-in: Add carrots, peas, or corn.

  • No-Cheese Version: Skip cheese and add extra butter on top.


Storage

  • Refrigerate leftovers up to 3 days.

  • Reheat in oven or microwave.
